Govt planning new AI law to protect rights of news publishers: Report

The government is planning to formulate a new AI law to protect the rights of news publishers and content creators, as well as reducing harm to users, as per a media report.

Speaking to a news publication, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the new AI law will be very balanced and strong on securing the rights. He further said that there will be provision for sharing the proceeds among news publishers, content creators and AI-enabled technologies such as large language models (LLMs), while ensuring space for innovation.

The Minister added that the new AI law could either be an independent legislation or part of the Digital India Bill, which is set to replace the 24-year-old Information Technology Act, 2000.

Vaishnaw also assured that the transition would not disrupt livelihood of the people. He also stressed on keeping in mind the intellectual property and financial and commercial implications of creativity.

The minister told the news publication that the government’s views had been shared with tech players, who more or less agreed in principle.

Globally, the use of artificial intelligence in the European Union will be regulated by the AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive AI law. In April 2021, the European Commission had proposed the first EU regulatory framework for AI. The European Union Parliament in March 2024 approved the Artificial Intelligence Act that ensures safety and compliance with fundamental rights, while boosting innovation.
