As the world returned to normalcy following the pandemic, so did the streaming and entertainment industry. 2022, in particular, was an excellent year as production companies and streaming platforms were back in full force, launching and marketing brand-new TV series and films. Historically, Indian series and movies tend to do better than internationally-acclaimed content, and according to this list of the most popular shows streamed in India in 2022, this is true. 

 

India has over 45 million over-the-top (OTT) subscribers who stream content over the internet, and that number is projected to reach 50 million by the end of this year. Considering that Netflix began to roll out more affordable ad-supported tiers on their platforms, these numbers are crucial for advertisers, marketers, and public relations officials if they want to improve their work in 2023. 

 

Below, we look at five of the most popular Indian shows in 2022. 

1. Anupamaa  

Anupamaa is perhaps India’s most well-known series. In this Hindi-language drama, Rupali Ganguly stars as an idealistic housewife who struggles to navigate life with her children and cheating husband. According to research, the series is s popular; three in five Indian households have watched the series. Anupamaa premiered on July 13, 2020, on Star Plus, and as of 2022, it hit its 700th episode mark. The overall viewership of the show has reached over 248 million viewers.

2023 marks an exciting year for Anupamaa as it crosses its 800th episode.

 

2.Aranyak

Everyone loves a good murder mystery, and Aranyak hits the spot if you’re interested in an exciting series. Available on Netflix, Aranyak follows two Indian police officers as they attempt to solve the murder and rape of a teenage girl in the town. To add to the excitement, both officers have to grapple with their inner demons and struggle with the morality of the crime in front of them. 

 

Currently, there’s no word on whether the series will see a second season, but given its popularity, it’s difficult to believe it won’t continue.

 

 3.Rudra: The Edge of Darkness 

Fans of the British detective series Luther will love Rudra: The Edge of Darkness. The series, starring Ajay Devgn, is a remake of the British psychological thriller. Following a traumatic incident with a crime suspect who ended up in a coma, Rudra struggles with his detective duties, and it’s clear that his time away from the force has affected his abilities. Each episode explores a new criminal case, making it an exciting journey for viewers.

 

4.Lock Upp 

Lock Upp is the most interesting and unique reality TV series in 2022. In Lock Upp, nineteen contestants, who have been accused of various crimes in real life, fight it out to earn basic necessities to survive. Some contestants, like Poonam Pandey, Munawar Faruqui, and Sara Khan, are small-time celebrities and influencers in their own right. 

These contestants, also known as inmates, will need to win the heart of the show’s host, Kangana Ranaut, wow viewers with their personalities, and garner votes to be crowned winner of the show. 

Within 48 hours of its release, Lock Upp gained 15 million viewers and crossed 100 million views within 19 days of its release. By April 2022, the series had surpassed over 300 million views, making it one of the most successful Indian reality TV shows around.

 5.Aashram

Season three of Aashram premiered in June 2022 to much fanfare. The Hindi crime drama starring Bobby Deol revolves around a religious figure known as Baba Nirala and his followers who have blind faith in him. Baba Nirala takes advantage of his god-like status to squander money from his followers and to promote himself as a respected religious leader. Despite its success, Aashram has had its fair share of controversy, with some critics saying that the show attempts to discredit Hinduism and ashrams. It was announced that Aashram would return in 2023 for a fourth season. 

 

2023 also looks to be an exhilarating year for the streaming industry and its viewers, especially with new shows and movies being released almost monthly. Plus, many fan favorites, like Aashram, Anupamaa, and Rocket Boys, will return with new seasons and continue captivating viewers.
