Indian shoppers to shop on mobile: eBay Study

eBay India (www.ebay.in), India’s leading eCommerce marketplace, shared key summer shopping habits of Mobile Commerce users in India.  The findings are basis the eBay India Summer Mobile Commerce Survey conducted with 1,345 eBay India users in April 2013. 92% of all Mobile Commerce survey respondents were Male. 39% of consumers were in the age group of 18-25 years & 31% of consumers were in the age group of 26-30 years indicating popularity of the medium amongst youth. 49% of Mobile Shoppers were from the Non-Metro cities of India.

Key Highlights of the eBay India Summer Mobile Commerce Survey included:

  • 59% of Mobile Shoppers stated they would consider shopping on their Mobile phone this summer to avoid the summer heat and crowded market areas
  • Mobile shoppers seek to stay cool with purchases of Sunglasses (49%), Cotton Apparel (43%), Tees (36%), Shorts (34%) & Caps (18%).
  • White is the top color this season for 56% of mobile shoppers followed by Blue (50%), Green (22%), Black (20%) & Cream (20%).
  • Amongst gadget shopping, 67% of mobile shoppers are seeking to buy Mobile Phones followed by Tablets at 35%.
  • 83% of Mobile Shoppers prefer to use their Mobile to shop for themselves, while 30% of consumers use their Mobile to shop for their Parents, 29% for their Spouse & only 19% of shoppers use their Mobile to shop for Children.
  • Phones (47%) will be the most popular category of purchase by Mobile Commerce shoppers for their family & friends this season followed by Clothes & Footwear (42%).
  • Comparing product prices (72%) was the top activity for Mobile Shoppers.
  • Home (71%) was the favourite point of access for mobile shoppers.
  • Over 43% of shoppers accessed shopping sites at Night.
  • 62% of Mobile Shoppers always checked prices on their phone before they shopped in a store or a mall.
  • For over 52% of mobile shoppers, debit card is the preferred mode of payment.
  • 85% of all respondents stated that they accessed shopping sites or shopping apps on their mobile device; with 60% of all respondents stating that they had bought a product online on their mobile device.
  • Over 25% of Mobile Shoppers preferred to shop via their mobile device for products in the price point of Rs. 10,001 & above.
  • 36% of mobile shoppers shop once – twice in a month, while 24% shop via their mobile device frequently
  • Convenience of mobile shopping is what makes 54% of consumers shop via mobile phones / tablets
  • Mobile continues to be the favourite Mobile Internet device for Mobile Shoppers at 51%; with 18% using both their Mobile & Tablet equally.
  • Mobile Shoppers prefer to access shopping sites via Browsers (46%). Over 21% of Shoppers use both Apps & Browsers equally on their mobile device
  • 57% of Consumers use 3G services, 32% use 2G services & only 11% use EDGE.
  • Samsung is the most popular Mobile Device (39%), followed by Nokia (16%) & Apple (11%)
  • Mobile Shoppers have Android (68%) as their favourite operating system followed by iOS (11%) & Symbian (10%)
  • 53% of consumers have downloaded the eBay app or surfed the eBay website via mobile phones / tablets

eBay India Mobile Commerce Summer Survey Methodology:
eBay India users were surveyed online in April 2013. 1,345 users filled up the Mobile Commerce Survey on their Mobile Shopping habits.
