IRS Q3 2010: The movers, shakers & crawlers!

The IRS Q3 2010 results were declared on the 2nd of December 2010. The results came in the form of an exciting announcement for the Hindi dailies. The Hindi daily category in all gained around an Average Issue Readership (AIR) growth of 1,563,000 over Q2.

The number one in this category is Dainik Jagran with a total readership of 54,723,000, following it at number two is Dainik Bhaskar with a total readership of 33,807,000. Hindustan with a total readership of 33,143,000 is placed at number three while Amar Ujala is at number four with a total readership of 29,738,000.

The Hindi daily category has done well in the state of Uttar Pradesh with a growth of 560,000 in its AIR. Madhya Pradesh has proved to be the next big market for the Hindi dailies with a growth in its AIR by 404,000 over Q2. The state of Rajasthan is fifth on the list of states that were big markets for the category with an increased AIR of 115,000.

The Hindi dailies' upward stride can also be attributed to the fact that many a publications had lowered their cover prices.

The English dailies have a total readership of 32,008,000 and growth of about 31,000 readers compared to Q2. The IRS Q3 results spell out the Times of India as the top player amongst the English dailies with a total readership of 13,582,000, followed by Hindustan Times with a readership base of 6,333,000 readers. The Hindu is placed at number three with a total readership of 5,207,000 and The Telegraph at number four has a total readership of 2,904,000.

The category has seen growth in the states like Haryana (12.9%), Himachal Pradesh (12.2%) and Gujarat (10.2%). On the other hand, towns like Bareily, Varanasi and Raipur as a market have shown double digit percentage growth for English dailies.

The Bengali dailies' category with a decreased total readership of 20,820,000 compared to Q2's total readership of 21,029,000 saw growth in Assam by 3.2%, Anand Bazaar Patrika and Bartaman being the top two players in this category.

On the other hand, Gujarati dailies saw an increase in their total readership from 15,892,000 in Q2 to 16,366,000 in Q3. In the Gujarat market the category saw an increase by 420,000 readers, and in Maharashtra by 54,000 readers. Gujarat Samachar leads the market with a total readership of 8,833,000 readers. Sandesh the next big player in the category has a readership base of around 6,226,000 readers.

The Kannada dailies have seen an increase in their readership by 3.5% and by adding upto 582,000 readers. In the state of Karnataka alone the category has seen a increase in its total readership by 3.6%. The top three players in this category are Vijay Karnataka (7,889,000 readers), Prajavani (6,850,000 readers) and Kannada Prabha (2,533,000 readers).

Malayalam dailies and Marathi dailies both have seen an increase in their readership by gaining 772,000 readers and 374,000 readers respectively. The Malayalam dailies have seen a decline in the state of Delhi by 4,000 readers and faired well in states like Goa (75.0%), Karnataka (11.5%) and Kerala (3.6%). The top three players in the Malayalam language daily market are Malayala Manorama, Mathrubhumi and Deshabhimani with a total readership of 12,751,000 , 88,52,000 and 3,054,000 respectively.

While the Marathi dailies have seen a decline in Karnataka, it has seen growth in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa. The top three dailies in Marathi language are Lokmat, Daily Sakaal and Punya Nagari with total readership of 23,673,000 , 11,324,000 and 9,379,000 respectively.

The Tamil dailies have seen a decline by 72,000 readers; Daily Tanthi is the number one Tamil daily with a total readership of 20,500,000. The category has seen growth in states like Karnataka by 8.7% and in Maharashtra by 2.7%

On the other hand Telugu dailies have seen a increase in their readership by gaining 659,000 readers. The category has done well in states like Karnataka and Orissa and has added 19,000 and 12,000 readers respectively to the total readership of Telugu dailies.
