NDTV pulls out of BARC days before resumption of TV news ratings

NDTV Group has decided to pull out of BARC India’s ratings system just days before the resumption of TV news ratings. This was confirmed to Adgully by Suparna Singh, Group President, NDTV. As reported earlier, NDTV had in February 2022 announced that it was opting out of receiving ratings data for the ‘blackout’ period.

BARC India will release the previous 13 weeks’ data prior to the week of resumption of data under the Augmented Data Reporting Standards. The Augmented Standards entail the reporting of audience estimates for News and Special Interest genre channels on a 4-week rolling average basis, which would be released regularly every week along with the estimates for all other channels. All viewership data will be published on the same YUMI platform that all BARC subscribers use.

BARC India to resume publishing of news channel ratings from March 17

In a statement issued earlier, NDTV had hit out at the manipulation and buying of TRPs and had maintained that it had been among the earliest and biggest proponents to clean up the ratings system. The group alleged that the ratings system misled the advertisers and their agencies who would misallocate money on the basis of the gross misrepresentation of each news channel’s market share.

Meanwhile, as per media reports, BARC India is considering delaying the resumption of TV news ratings after receiving submissions from various news channels on the period of release.

BARC India had announced in February 2022 that will release individual news channel data with effect from Thursday, March 17 2022.
