Scarlett Johansson sues AI developer for unauthorized image use

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has sued an AI application developer, citing unauthorized utilization of her identity and image in an online advertisement. According to reports by Variety, the said advertisement pertained to an AI image enhancement tool known as "Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar."

The advertisement prominently showcased an AI-generated facsimile of Scarlett Johansson's voice. Over the course of the 22-second ad, viewers were granted an exclusive peek behind the scenes of Johansson's filming of her role in "Black Widow," with her audibly stating, "Greetings, everyone. This is Scarlett, and I invite you to join me." However, the advertisement underwent a substantial shift, deviating from Johansson, as it introduced an AI-generated voice, aimed at mimicking the actress, pronouncing, "Its applications transcend avatars exclusively. You can also craft visual content with text and even generate your AI videos. I strongly urge you not to miss out."

Towards the conclusion of the advertisement, Convert Software, the entity behind the app, appended a disclaimer indicating, "Images produced by Lisa AI. It is unrelated to this individual." Representatives for Scarlett Johansson made it clear that she had never endorsed the application.
Numerous US states, California included, enforce stringent statutes safeguarding privacy rights, especially pertaining to the unapproved exploitation of an individual's "name, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness" for advertising or promotional objectives. Although some celebrities may pursue litigation to establish legal precedents, most cases are amicably resolved through cease and desist orders.
