Schbang’s Women’s Day initiative outrages Twitterattis
The idea must have sounded great at the conference table and no doubt, the intention behind it was a noble one. However, the plan misfired and resulted in an unexpected foot-in-the-mouth moment. We are talking about Schbang’s move to rename itself as ‘Shebang’ to mark Women’s Day this year. The line appearing along with the changed name didn’t help either – ‘Thank you to every She, who gets the Bang to Schbang.’
It was supposed to celebrate the formidable female workforce, while making it a smart play on the name of the holistic marketing solutions company, however, it left social media users outraged and bewildered as to how this ‘faux pas’ was even approved in the first place.
Creativity is all about being original, relevant and with some meaningful communication idea. However, there is a limit to being creative just for the heck of it, which will never take the brand anywhere. Marketers and agencies might do well to remember the ‘Shebang’ faux pas before coming up with any more such ‘smart’ word play and ideas.
