Shiv Shivkumar’s valuable lessons in successful time management

The main goal of thought leadership is to become recognised as an expert and used as a go-to resource in your field. Thought Leaders have the expertise to guide businesses and successfully tackle challenges, charter a growth course, but most of all encourage business leaders to think innovatively and look beyond the obvious. They have a deeper understanding of the market and are, therefore, able to create insightful analysis and content and show the organisation the right growth path.

Held on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, the sixth edition of the Thought Leadership Series saw one of India’s longest-serving CEOs, Shiv Shivkumar, Group Executive President, Aditya Birla Group, in a scintillating conversation with host R Sridhar, where he spoke about how time management plays a significant role in a thought leader’s life. The warm camaraderie between the two industry leaders was evident throughout the conversation as the back and forth banter between the two kept the audience engaged.

On being asked by Sridhar about multitasking and the secret for successful time management, Shivkumar replied, “There is no secret for time management, first thing is that one should give their job 110%, that’s critical. One cannot spend their time participating in extracurricular activities by hurting the job. Second, I always believe that it is important for every professional to contribute to the society. I have been on many boards like IIM Ahmedabad, the board of the audit committee of Kolkata, and more, basically, the education business has always been appealing to me. Looking forward to other aspects, where industry people will invite you for giving speeches at various events, so as a Leader you have to commit that also. Whether it is professional or personal, one should also know how to use their debt time by doing something or the other.”

Shivkumar also highlighted how to avoid distractions as much as possible to successfully manage one’s time. “One of the things that the younger generation needs to know is to avoid distractions. You plan to do certain things, but you end up doing something else, which are not up to the mark, not even 50% correctly done. Hence, you should be focused. And finally, when you manage your work well with discipline, it will develop into repeatable habits. Then you tend to take less time and can look after other priorities. So, it’s a constant virtuous cycle that you have to plan, execute, learn do it again and that’s what helps you manage time.”
