'The Udder Side is a crazy twisted dictionary' says PV Subramanium, Author

A dentist by profession and a writer by choice, P.V. Subramanium is a voracious reader and this habit of reading diverse subjects and genres helps him to fuel his natural wit and humor.  His unique perspective and insights into current events, with perfect comic timing, has always had his friends and family in splits.

His astute sense caught on to the sentiment, and he started identifying and putting in a new meaning to many a word. Of course, each was sprinkled with his own personal and unique sense of humour. Thus came about the book - 'The Udder Side'.

In an exclusive conversation with Adgully, P.V. Subramanium, Author, Dictionary of English : The Udder Side , shares insights about the book and how he considers the dictionary a storehouse of vast knowledge.

We all use the dictionary in our every day life, but for him it is not only a source through which one can increase their vocabulary, but an immense source of knowledge. So, when asked to brief us about "Dictionary of English : The Udder Side" Subramanium said, " It is s a crazy twisted dictionary having double meaning words and has been redefined with humour. The words used in everyday life and even in professional spheres have been re-described and this is how the book has been twisted around. It's a complete take on words used in newspapers, ad agencies, religion practices and in the field of law.  I started working on the content part about 8-10 years back," he shared.

Subramanium considers the dictionary abound with puns and witty meanings, so when asked to share his notion of what the dictionary means to him,  he said, “We look at the normal dictionary only as a heavy book. It’s difficult to search words in such books and till date has just been used for reference."

In India acceptance has always been a challenge and though a book like this will be easily accepted abroad, is it the same scenario in India? We asked Subramanium to share with us some of the challenges he faced while writing ‘The Udder Side”. To this he replied, “This book is a niche genre and has humour in the English language which is very common in western countries though less in India. As the genre was very different, the problem I faced was to find a publisher for my book. But Fingerprint agreed to  publish my book."

This light hearted book has been targeted toward the, young adult who is comfortable with the English language and also for adults in the age group of 24-50 years.

Being a dental surgeon by profession, what motivated him to become a writer? He avers, "Everybody has a writer in them. It's up to us to bring out the writer in us."

He has no plans of giving up his present profession as a dentist and does not wish to deviate from  his passion for writing either and hopes to continue both simultaneously.

With regard to the marketing and promotion of the  "Dictionary of English : The Udder Side" which was launched a couple of months back he explained, "We are promoting and marketing it on digital and social media space like Facebook and also doing Blogs. We are also doing book store based promotions and word of mouth for the initial period. We are also planning to take this book to the markets where English is spoken which are large metros and the overseas market in the US and UK."

Post writing this book he is currently focusing on dentistry and also his passion viz. wildlife photography.   Sharing his views on the key characteristics required to be a writer, he said, “Language skills, wide level of knowledge, reading other writers and understanding of different styles of writing is what attributes to the characteristics of a writer."

P.V. Subramanium believes in one philosophy in life….’live today, but wisely; there may not be a tomorrow!’

"Dictionary of English : The Udder Side" a 300 pages book, covers 1000- 1500 redefined words.
