TRAI report shows growth in DTH subscriber base

In the realm of pay direct-to-home (DTH) services, there has been a 1.59% growth in the active subscriber base. The latest Performance Indicator Report (PIR) from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reveals that private DTH companies have successfully acquired 1.04 million new paid active subscribers between September 30, 2022, and December 31, 2022.
The pay DTH sector now boasts a total active subscriber base of approximately 66.62 million, in addition to the subscribers of the free DTH services provided by Doordarshan (DD Free Dish). This represents an increase from 65.58 million active subscribers in September 2022 to 66.62 million in December 2022.


In the realm of pay TV channels, as of December 31, 2022, out of the 892 permitted satellite TV channels available for downlinking in India, there are 357 satellite pay TV channels. Among these, 254 are standard definition (SD) satellite pay TV channels, while 103 are high definition (HD) satellite pay TV channels

Tata Play holds 32.70% market share for the quarter, followed by Bharti Telemedia (Airtel DTH) with 26.35%, Dish TV with 22.36%, and Sun TV Direct TV with 18.59% market share.
Moving on to the cable TV sector, as of December 31, 2022, there are 1748 Multiple System Operators (MSOs) registered with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB). According to data provided by MSOs and HITS operators, 12 MSOs and 1 HITS operator have a subscriber base exceeding one million. GTPL Hathway boasts the highest subscriber base of over 8 million, followed by Siti Networks Ltd with over 6 million, and Hathway Digital with over 5 million subscribers.


In the FM radio service domain, the ad revenue reported by FM radio operators for the quarter ending December 31, 2022, for the 388 private FM radio channels amounts to Rs 427.18 crore, compared to Rs. 385.86 crore in the previous quarter.
Apart from the radio channels operated by All India Radio, there are 388 private FM radio channels across 113 cities, operated by 36 private FM radio operators. There have been no changes in the number of operational private FM radio channels, cities, and FM radio operators compared to the previous quarter.
