Twitter halts Blue Tick subscriptions after deluge of fake accounts

There seems to be no end to Twitter’s and Elon Musk’s troubles. Just days after launching the $8 Blue Tick subscription program, Twitter has suspended this program. This has been done following a growing number of users impersonating well-known brands, including Tesla, Nintendo, Eli Lilly, Lockheed Martin, as well as personalities, such as basketball player Lebron James, US President Joe Biden and more.

Ever since Elon Musk took charge of Twitter after a $44 billion buyout, the transition has been chaotic to say the least. Large scale layoffs have taken place across the world, wherein over 50% of Twitter’s workforce has been let go of, including a reported 90% of the workforce in India.

Advertisers have also started exiting from the platform, who are concerned about the slew of imposter accounts and the growing hate speech, and whether the Twitter management will be able to tackle these effectively.
