Understanding the voice of the working youth in Mumbai!

An extensive survey by Young Bombay Forum, the youth arm wing of Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry, revealed the top most issues of Mumbai’s working youth. Besides endless commuting and lack of affordable housing, most Mumbaikar’s are concerned about their lack of time to indulge in any form of exercise.

The primary objective of the survey conducted earlier this year by IMRB was to understand what the working youth think about life in Mumbai at work and beyond it. About a 1000 working individuals in Mumbai from across 560 small, medium and large enterprises in the age group of 21-35 years were included in this survey. These included the youth who were single, married, residents of the city and those here on work from other states.

The survey included questions on job oopportunities, income levels, stress factors at work, work –life balance, job satisfaction, availability of housing, healthcare, education, culture etc.
“Working youth are the drivers of the economy and this is even more relevant in Mumbai – which is the commercial capital of India. What the working youth think is indicative of how the city stacks up on various parameters. This survey has brought to the fore some genuine problems being faced by the youth of Mumbai,” said Mr. Ashith Kampani, Chairperson, Young Bombay Forum.

Deepa Mathew, Group Business Director, IMRB International, said, “This survey has given us an insight about what the working youth in Mumbai really feel like. While Mumbai is on its way to becoming a world-class city, meeting the aspiration and addressing the issues of its working youth is imperative.”

Some key findings:

  • Long working hours and one weekly off is the reason why most feel they aren’t getting any rest
  • Most don’t mind the commute as long as the job is satisfying and they are learning something on the job
  • 60% of the people in Mumbai are not extremely satisfied with the work that they are doing
  • Most wish to remain in Mumbai as the city continues to be a ‘city of dreams’
