Weekend Exclusive | Textile to writing, Sachit Jain all set to takeoff

Indian fiction writing is an emerging market with writers mushrooming every other day. While Indian writers may have touched upon almost every other subject under the sun, fictional management novels is a genre that isn't explored as much.

Sachit Jain, Executive Director, Vardhman Textiles Limited has recently launched his new book- Ready for Take Off: A leadership Story. Being an alumnus of IIT, Delhi and IIM, Ahmedabad and also with more than twenty years of experience in the industry, Jain offers insight into the management world through a fictional story. Talking exclusively to Adgully, Jain shares his experience of writing the novel.

"I have been communicating with my employees in our organization on the various issues for last several years. And I also wanted to reach out to a bigger audience in the country. I wanted to put down my management ideas and then the thought came that it should be a novel so that it is easy to read. Normally management books are very dry. People connect better through a story," he said.

"My role didn't inspire me but the experiences that I had inspired me. It is not only that you can be a nice human being but also get good performance at the same time. Many of the experiences in the novel are real but the story is fiction," he further added.

Jain's book is in key with the existing scenario in the industry. Having come from that background, Jain understood the environment perfectly which he translated into a book.

"I think the book is extremely relevant in today's context as the number of Indians joining management in supervisory positions is constantly increasing and there are lots of young entrepreneurs coming into the business without professional education, so this book gives them in a practical format, the simple aspects of management and also can help improve their performance," he explained.

The plot of the novel begins with an investment banker who sells a deal to his client but the client only agrees if he comes over to one of the company. As a banker with no experience in manufacturing, he goes on to become a MD of a steel company.

"The story then revolves around how he manages his work with his employees and his relationship with his wife with strong dialogues that define leadership in the end," Jain further said.

Targeting at college students and above, this book talks about what the alphabets in the word "leadership' stands for and the essential qualities one must have to be a leader. It is in-depth insight which has been derived from Jain's innumerable experiences in the industry. Jain also has a sequel in mind with perhaps the same characters. | By Janees Antoo [janees(at)adgully.com]
