Amazon considering stand-alone sports App: Reports

Amazon may come up with a stand-alone app exclusively for sports content, reports The Information. It is not possible to say whether the stand-alone app will become part of the Prime membership or be charged separately.

Though an official confirmation is yet come by, the CEO Andy Jassy has expressed his ambitions about the company’s streaming revenues, especially from live sports events.

While confirming that sports programming has helped boost Amazon Prime subscriptions, Andy Jassy said: "You'll continue to see us investing in sports… Sports is such a unique asset ... If you look every year at the most watched programs, sport often occupies 75% of those spots."

Amazon has inked deals worth billions of dollars to stream live sports even as it is trying to tighten its belt in other areas of business. The company has been showing greater interest in live sports after it tasted success with Thursday Night Football. It was in 2017 that Amazon struck a $50-million deal with the National Football League (NFL) to stream Thursday Night Football, beating legacy players as well as tech giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo.
The NFL is the most valuable content across the sports and entertainment landscape with NFL games making up all 25 of television's most-watched programs since the start of September. Through Week 5 of the 2022 regular season, NFL games are averaging 16.8 million viewers per game.
This year Prime Video will exclusively stream a newly scheduled Black Friday game the Friday after Thanksgiving Day. The first-ever NFL Black Friday game will take place Friday, November 24, 2023 with an expected kickoff time of 3 p.m. EST. The participating teams will be announced when the 2023 schedule is released.
Recently, Amazon entered into a multi-year agreement with Overtime Elite (OTE), the Atlanta-based professional basketball league, for streaming rights to 20 live games per season for the next three seasons.
