ASDA (Walmart UK) Sources 80 Containers of Grapes from Maharashtra, India

ASDA (Walmart UK) stores have collaborated with Bharti Walmart Direct Farm Program to source international quality grapes from Maharashtra, India. ASDA stores have imported over 80 containers of table grapes during 2011 and the export figure is expected to almost double to over 150 containers in 2012.

Under Bharti Walmart’s Direct Farm initiative, the Company is helping by training farmers, supply chain partners and others involved in export of Indian grapes to ensure global GAP Certification of each farm under direct export program. The Direct Farm program also includes management of post harvest supply chain including harvesting, pre-cooling, packaging and shipments and traceability and food safety of each lot with capability to track each farm. Moving forward, Bharti Walmart would replicate this model to source other farm produce from India.

The Direct Farm Program aims to enable the development of a robust supply chain, link farming communities directly to consumers, introduce farming best practices and improve the overall quality of lives of the farming communities. Bharti Walmart is investing in establishing an efficient back-end supply chain management operation to help make it efficient, thereby maximizing value for farmers and retailers, as well as consumers. The supply chain operation supports farmers who have limited infrastructure and distribution strength and help minimize wastage of fresh foods and vegetables. An efficient supply chain can play an important role in transforming farmers into successful entrepreneurs. The program includes over 4000 farmers across Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The program has immensely benefited farmers, stores and customers. Farmers receive - 5-7% higher price than Mandis, expert advice on better crop planning and management and an opportunities to maximize and improve income by offering better quality crops. The customers, in turn gets fresh farm produce, consistent quality, safer food and at a low cost as compared to what is available at local markets.
