Brands celebrate Halloween

The spooky season is here! Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the evening before All Saints' or All Hallows' Day, which falls on October 31. This marks the day prior to the Western Christian feast of All Saints and initiates the Allhallowtide season, lasting for three days and concluding with All Souls' Day. The celebration of Halloween is considered largely non-religious in most parts of North America and Europe.

Halloween originates from the festival of Samhain among the Celts of Britain and Ireland. In their tradition, the new year began on the day corresponding to November 1 in contemporary calendars. This day marked the start of the winter period, the renewal of land tenures, and the return of herds from pastures. During the observance of the Samhain festival, it was believed that the souls of the dead returned to their homes, and lost lives were on a journey to the otherworld.

On this occasion, people lit bonfires on hilltops to relight their hearth fires for the winter season and to ward off evil spirits. They wore masks and other disguises to avoid being identified by the ghosts believed to be present. Witches, fairies, hobgoblins, and demons were all associated with this day.

The period was considered suitable for divination on matters related to health, marriage, and death. When the Celts were conquered by the Romans in the 1st Century CE, the festivals of Feralia, which celebrated the departed, and Pomona, the goddess of harvest, were incorporated into the celebrations.
