Google appeals to SC challenging CCI order

Google has appealed to the Supreme Court, claiming that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) made decisions based on unreliable statements from Amazon and Mozilla. The CCI had issued orders against Google for abusing its dominance in the Android market. Google argues that Amazon and Mozilla have their own interests and should not have been given credibility by the CCI.

The CCI's orders included several actions for Google, such as not forcing device manufacturers to pre-install a bundle of applications. Google contends that Amazon informed the CCI during the investigation that Google's restrictions hindered the development of its Android fork called Fire OS. However, Google argues that the CCI unjustly relied on Amazon's claims, as Fire OS had poor commercial performance and was not even launched in India.

Furthermore, the CCI mandated that users should be able to choose their default search engine during device setup and easily change default settings.

In a separate order on October 25, 2022, the CCI fined Google Rs 936.44 crore for its abuse of dominant position regarding Play Store policies.
