In conversation with Govind Sharan, winner of the Garment Construction Award!

In conversation with Govind Sharan the winner of the  Garment Construction Award at the graduation ceremony of NIFT in association with USHA Sewing Machines.

Adgully (AG): How does it feel to have won the ‘best garment construction’ award by Usha International Ltd.?

Govind Sharan (GS): It feels amazing to have won this award by Usha. It’s great that corporates are recognizing young talents like us. Its not just an award for me but also a challenge to keep upto the reward and raise the bar higher. Garment construction is a technical art, that Usha as a company has been advocating for so many years so, it’s indeed a pleasure to have a respectable corporate to have motivated me.

AG: What has been your source of inspiration?

GS: My father has been a source of inspiration right from the beginning. He is a goldsmith by profession and I have been assisting him right from my childhood days (9th std) helping him in executing and also creating designs. And for the winning collection, my theme was ‘Interview’ simply because a fresher gets judged by the way he/she dresses-up. So it’s a great challenge to portray and position your personality in front of a potential job opportunity that may define the bread-butter of life.

AG: Which celebrities do you foresee your collection to be adorned by?

GS: I would want my designs to be adorned by anybody who has a sleek body and has an image of being urban yet corporate. I have designed garment for Imran Khan and I think someone who has a similar body type would compliment well with my designs.

AG: Who is your ideal designer from the industry and why?

GS: There would be many to name it all in one go. But I specifically idealise Mr. Narendra Kumar Ahmed’s collection as he has been a close mentor for us in NIFT and is exceptionally good when it comes to garment construction and patterns. Rajendra Rathod and Arjun Khanna would be a few to name, otherwise.

AG: Any future plans.

GS: Its a designer’s dream to have a label of his own. I plan to get into accessory designs and would be excited to associate with corporates like Usha International Ltd. In some way to bring alive the venture.

AG: Share your experience at NIFT with us?

GS: Nift has been a core part of my life. Right from my early age I wanted to get into a creative field and there could be nothing better my way but NIFT. The only objective in my mind was to be creative and get my basics right, which NIFT has fairly helped me to achieve.

AG: What according to you goes into constructing a garment?

GS: I specialize in men’s wear. The entire deal in constructing a good garment is to get your patterns right.  This forms the core to constructing the garment in a beautified manner.
