India experiences the best of music & participants at the Global Citizen Live

International advocacy organization, Global Citizen, in partnership with Wizcraft, had Mumbai, India proudly represented at the Global Citizen Live’s broadcast - a combination of festivals, events, and performances airing from locations on six continents on Saturday, September 25. The once-in-a-generation day of global unity called on world leaders, philanthropists, and corporations to address the pandemic, hunger and climate challenges, ahead of the G20 and COP26 summits. The campaign saw 1.1 million actions and over 70 new announcements thanks to the efforts of many hard working and dedicated partners.

Global Citizen Live was part of a once-in-a-generation day of unity across seven continents was successfully broadcast over 24 hours around the world on Apple Music, Apple TV App, YouTube, and Twitter. Audiences also got a chance to witness the exclusive broadcast of the global festival on the channels of ZEE and streamed on the OTT platform ZEE5 in India.

Hosted by the dynamic actor & producer, Anil Kapoor, the night witnessed iconic performances by Amit Trivedi, Ajay-Atul, Badshah featuring Aastha Gill and Tanishk Bagchi featuring Nikhita Gandhi, Zara Khan & Yasser Desai.

This was followed by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan who delivered a special message for the nation.

The Honourable Prime Minister Sr. Narendra Modi who also made a special appearance spoke about the urgent need for vaccine equity.

The Tourism and Environment minister of Maharashtra - Mr. Aaditya Thackeray who was also present spoke about climate change being the greatest inequity and how we need to protect the environment and balance the 5 elements of nature.

Expressing joy, Anil Kapoor said “I am so glad that I got to be a part of Global Citizen LIVE'S worldwide broadcast. It was a wonderful experience to host Mumbai, India on such a massive platform. This campaign was a much needed initiative for our time and I hope we have created the right kind of awareness"

Artists who donated their time and talent to support the Global Citizen Live campaign from Mumbai included: Kiara Advani, Riteish Deshmukh, Ayushmann Khurran, Ananya Panday, Sadhguru, Janhvi Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan, Farhan Aktar and Dia Mirza who voiced their support towards climate change, vaccine equity and defeat global poverty.

Speaking about Mumbai, India’s involvement and support towards the global campaign, Aaditya Thackeray, Minister of Tourism and Environment, Maharashtra said ‘It is a historic moment, as Maharashtrians have shown the world that we are true Global Citizens. In Global Citizen Live, we have seen extraordinary leadership from young people. It is my goal for all young Maharashtrians to become climate champions. This is why I am pleased to announce that 43 cities and urban clusters from Maharashtra State will join the global Race to Zero initiative of the UN. Moreover, Mumbai announced it will join the groundbreaking C40 Women Mentorship Program. As we have seen the power of hundreds of millions of young people taking action to defend our planet, I call on all cities to follow our example in joining the Race to Zero.’

Venkateshwara Hatcheries’ Venkys, as lead partners for the Global Citizen Live Campaign in India engaged with Global Citizen for its India-focussed initiatives for the third successive time. Venkateshwara Hatcheries, celebrating 50 years of their enterprise, are long-term supporters of Global Citizen’s initiatives in India, having been presenting partners of the Global Citizen Festival-Mumbai, and VAX LIVE: The Concert to Reunite the World, which was broadcast at the height of Covid-19 and called for global vaccine equity.

One of the world’s biggest supporters of vaccine equity, Serum Institute of India, also joined in this year to support The Global Citizen Live- Mumbai initiative. Along with Venkateshwara Hatcheries, Adani Group and Maharashtra Tourism, corporate support extended a hand to make India’s voice heard on the global stage building up to the Paris meet of COP 26.
