Indian Athletes take #GC2018 and Twitter by storm

The 2018 Commonwealth Games #GC2018 has come to a close, and this was India’s third most successful Commonwealth Games event of all time. Twitter is where live sport happens, and through the games, fans on the platform supported the Indian athletes in real-time. From Tweets by the Prime Minister, to Twitter Moments that recapped the glory, India couldn’t stop talking about #GC2018.

With a 200-plus contingent delivering 66 medals at #GC2018, India surpassed the medal tally of 64 medals from the Commonwealth Games Glasgow which happened four years ago. The joy was shared on Twitter as the Indian contingent featured in 3 out of the top 5 most-Tweeted #GC2018 moments, basis Tweets per minute during the live event. The most Tweeted moment was that of World champion and Commonwealth Games record holder Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (@MirabaiChanu), who broke six records in six lifts to storm her way to gold in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event.

 

 

Indian shuttlers produced their best ever show at the Commonwealth Games and the mixed team Gold medal win was even more special as it was one of the top 5 most-Tweeted moments globally.

 

 

 

Wrestler Sushil Kumar’s third Gold medal win at the Commonwealth Games was another most-Tweeted moment globally on Twitter. The 34-year old grappler, who clinched the top podium finish in the Men’s 74kg freestyle wrestling, used Twitter not just to celebrate his success but also dedicate it to the victims of the tragic accident in Himachal Pradesh.
