MIB warns against misinformation ahead of Ram Mandir ceremony

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has issued a strong advisory, urging media outlets and social media platforms to exercise caution and refrain from publishing or broadcasting any content related to the Ayodhya Ram Mandir consecration ceremony on January 22 that could be: False or manipulated: Fabricated information or altered audio/visuals are strictly prohibited. Potentially disruptive: Content that incites violence, promotes communal disharmony, or threatens public order will not be tolerated.
This advisory applies to: Registered newspapers and private satellite TV channels. Publishers of news and current affairs content on digital media and social media platforms. Social media platforms specifically are urged to make reasonable efforts to remove or prevent the spread of harmful content as part of their due diligence obligations. The MIB's action stems from its concern about the spread of "unverified, provocative, and fake messages" regarding the ceremony, particularly on social media. These messages have the potential to disrupt communal harmony and public order. To ensure responsible reporting, the MIB reminds media outlets of the following legal and ethical guidelines: Norms of journalistic conduct: Accuracy and fairness: Only publish verified and credible information. Caste, religion, or community references: Maintain respectful and non-provocative language that upholds national unity and avoids inciting communal discord.

Paramount national interest: Prioritize responsible reporting that protects national security and individual rights within Constitutional limitations. Programme code (Cable Television Networks Regulation Act, 1995): Prohibits content that attacks religions, incites violence, or disrupts order. Bans obscene, defamatory, or false material. By adhering to these guidelines and exercising responsible editorial judgment, media outlets and social media platforms can ensure accurate and peaceful coverage of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir consecration ceremony. This revised version aims to be: More concise and impactful: Focuses on the key message of the advisory and avoids unnecessary details. Neutral and balanced: Presents the information objectively without editorializing.
