MOVIES NOW pays tribute to the 'King of Hollywood' James Cameron this October

James Francis Cameron, film director, film producer, deep-sea explorer, screenwriter, visual artist and editor, is one of the most celebrated personalities in Hollywood.  The top-tiered director of his generation, as well as one of the most precise, James Cameron reshaped 1980s and '90s Hollywood with a string of lucrative multimillion-dollar worth films remarkable for their marriage of technical wizardry and human sentiment. He developed new film technologies midstream in order to turn his creative visions into reality.

Cameron has enthralled audiences for over three decades. An audacious visionary, he has explored movie genres like Sci-Fi, Action, Romance, Adventure and Fantasy with astounding special effects.
To a man who has visualised films larger than life, who changed the cinema viewing experience and whose work of art is forever embedded in the history of film making, MOVIES NOW pays tribute to James Cameron, the film maker who attempted the unthinkable and challenged the boundaries, from path-breaking technology to experiential story-telling.  Watch some of the biggest blockbusters, two of which till date remain the highest grossers in the history of Hollywood every Thursday at 9pm on the Best of Cameron’ movie festival.

The festival begins with The Terminator which is a story based in the future of the on-going battles between humankind and "The Machines". With a budget of around $6.5 million and boasting sleek compositions, expertly edited action sequences, and a career-making performance by heretofore bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger, "The Terminator" was not just a critical and commercial triumph, it also marked the dawn of a new era of action movies. When it premiered in October 1984, The Terminator earned sensational reviews and became an instant runaway smash earning over $78 million worldwide.

Next up is Titanic, a seminal event in cinema in terms of size, scope and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossers, a magnum opus that will be reminisced by the generations to come. Despite his penchant for aliens of the deep and outer space, it was Titanic - a period romance based on the infamous ocean liner tragedy - that cemented Cameron as a director for the ages. Combining his passion for oceanic exploration and technology with his love of movies, Cameron advanced underwater filmmaking to a remarkable degree in Titanic. Thanks to repeat theatergoers - particularly the teenage girls who were smitten with Di Caprio, Titanic became the most successful movie ever made, pulling in a ridiculous $600 million in domestic box office and over $1 billion worldwide - the first film to ever to hit the 10-figure mark making Cameron ‘The King of the World’. The film received a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations, eventually winning 11.

James Cameron has been credited with single-handedly resurrecting a once-dead science fiction genre. Coming up next in the ‘Best of Cameron’ fest is a movie which is a timeless success and which gave  us one of the most memorable and brilliant villains ever printed on celluloid.  Avatar, the movie which gave film making a whole new dimension will be telecast on Thursday October 25th 2012. Cameron through his mega-budgeted sci-fi opus Avatar introduced to the world of cinema new methods like use of an advanced ‘performance capture’ technique – whereby the world could experience an animated/real world in the wonders of 3D. Avatar was widely considered to be a technological state-of-the-art spectacle, and proceeded to shatter box-office records around the world. Avatar won Cameron the Best Director at the Golden Globe Awards and received nomination from the Director's Guild and the Academy Awards.

Reteaming with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cameron proved himself worth the risk with another blockbuster with True Lies and one of the most expensive films ever made during its release year. The action sequences have that bold Cameron vibe to them. Production costs on "True Lies" exceeded the $60 million budget, forcing Cameron to scramble for financing. Reviewers and audiences were blown away by the over-the-top stunts and visual effects. Once again, Cameron helmed a solid hit that managed to turn a healthy profit, despite its Olympian budget. The film earned $146 million domestically and $232.6 million abroad, making it third best-grossing movie of 1994, and also a comeback for Schwarzenegger. For her performance, Jamie Lee Curtis received a 1994 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy.

On December 18, 2009, the same day Avatar was released worldwide, Cameron received the prestigious star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Cameron has long been a cinematic visionary and has helped shape modern cinema as we know it. He has established strong benchmarks in film-making. Anything James Cameron does, everyone follows!
