Urbanic, opens doors of a one-of-a-kind digital school in Mumbai

UK-based premium fashion brand, Urbanic, partners with Earth Angels Welfare Foundation in Mumbai to empower slum kids of Urban India via their digital learning initiative. The school is one of its kind, located at Govandi, in Eastern Mumbai. Govandi houses one of the largest slum dwellings in the city. The digital school aims to educate children from there, training them in the English language, and empowering them digitally.

James Wellwood, the founding partner of Urbanic, made a trip to India to visit and interact with the children, introducing them to the initiative prior to the ribbon-cutting ceremony last month. He further elaborated, “This initiative aligns with the core values of Urbanic, that makes a difference and creates value. It reflects the brands’ perspective and via this tech-driven learning centre, we aim to include all youth to help make the future better, brighter.”

The children and their parents alike were enthusiastic about the opening of the learning centre, and shared reasons they looked forward to the one-of-a-king undertaking. The children were eager to break through the generational cycle of suffering, and wanted to open doors to a future where they could achieve bigger and better dreams. The Urbanic team highlighted the importance of basic communication skills, especially in a world that is geared toward continual digital evolvement. Rahul Dayama, the Head of Marketing, Urbanic, says, “We feel honoured to be a part of this noble cause, giving opportunities to children from unfortunate circumstances a unique path to reach their full potential. We believe community engagement is key with these engagements, and have spent a great amount of time creating awareness, and stressing upon the importance of a digital education to young and old alike.”

The aim of this endeavour is to implement the desire to be in-tune with digital learnings and developments, and develop and hone communication in the English language as a life skill, especially amongst the underprivileged. Fostering this learning upon children at an impressionable age helps create a sense of independence and improves self-esteem, all while garnering wider opportunities for them. The physical school will serve as a portal toward amplifying educational and future employment opportunities, as well as enabling better decision making and creating independent youth.
