WPP becomes the first ad giant to discontinue operations in Russia

With the war escalating in Ukraine, a growing number of international companies, including Google, Meta, Twitter, Apple, Disney and Ford, are discontinuing operations in Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Coming out in support and solidarity with Ukraine, advertising behemoth WPP has decided to discontinue its operations in Russia. WPP has become the first ad company to do this. The country represented 0.6% of WPP's revenue less pass-through costs in 2021.
The group, which employs nearly 1,400 people across the country, says it regrets the impact on them. In a statement, WPP condemned the invasion of Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis that has ensued: “Our 200 people in Ukraine have shown extraordinary resilience and bravery in the face of the horrific attack on their country and we have been inspired by their example and the outpouring of support from their colleagues in the region and worldwide. We are in constant contact with our leaders in Ukraine to provide financial and other forms of practical assistance for our employees.”
The group has partnered with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to run an emergency fundraising appeal and is also match-funding all donations by WPP employees.
