A global revolution: Internet

I was reading about Hindustan Times's Leadership Summit when I stumbled upon an article that spoke of the effect of Internet on global activities and how the penetration of internet is revolutionizing the world.

The article was essentially Nikesh Arora's take on the contribution of internet and how it is going to change the face of things in the future too.

Google is one of the biggest players in the web space globally and has access to personal information of millions of people. This huge database that Google controls can act as one of the most important tools to control more or less every web-based activity; and those even beyond the scope of internet.

While reacting to a statement, Nikesh Arora admitted at being himself surprised at times on learning the magnitude of things that Google has the capacity to do! He said that existing operating systems were developed when the world was not connected. The Chrome OS ' Google's web-based operating system ' Arora said, is designed by integrating it optimally with the aspects of Internet.

Whether or not Google's Chrome OS will replace existing Windows and Apple operating systems is something he said is going to be decided by the users.

Close to 3 billion searches occur on the internet every day on Google alone. In addition to this, over 250 million people are maintaining a Facebook account while billions of emails are exchanged across the web. The high penetration capability of Internet coupled with low cost of computer storage and content generation are key elements to revolutionize the world.

Globally, internet has effected a fall in newspaper readership and TV viewership. However, India is yet to establish internet infrastructure in a robust way and the introduction of broadband across the network is only going to be a start. Arora indicated that there in an increased need to invest in internet infrastructure.
