IRS Q1 2011: Good news for Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu and Kannada dailies

The IRS Q1 2011 results were declared on the 17th of June 2011. The results came in the form of an exciting announcement for the Hindi dailies. The Hindi daily category in all had a growth from a total readership of 136,121,000 to 136,356,000.

The number one in this category is Dainik Jagran with a slightly increased total readership of 54,694,000, following it at number two is Hindustan with a total readership of 36,611,000. On the other hand Dainik Bhaskar is placed at number three this time with a total readership of 33,435,000. Amar Ujala is at number four with an increased total readership of 29,639,000.The Hindi daily category has done well in the state of Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The English dailies have a total readership of 31,704,000 and a de-growth of about 385,000 readers compared to Q4. The IRS Q1 results spell out the Times of India as the top player amongst the English dailies with a total readership of 13,605,000, followed by Hindustan Times with a readership base of 6,548,000 readers. The Hindu is placed at number three with a reduced total readership of 4,913,000 and The Telegraph at number four has a total readership of 2,811,000. DNA has has a total readership of about 1,592,000.

The category has seen good readership across states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The Bengali dailies' category with a decreased total readership of 20,616,000 compared to Q4's total readership of 20,757,000 saw good readership across the state of Chattisgarh. Anand Bazaar Patrika and Bartaman being the top two players in this category.

On the other hand, Gujarati dailies has seen an increase in their total readership from 16,315,000 in Q4 to 16,423,000 in this quarter. In the Gujarat market the category has added around 148,000 readers alone and in Maharashtra the category has lost around 40,000 readers. Gujarat Samachar leads the market with a total readership of 8,649,000 readers. Sandesh the next big player in the category has a readership base of around 5,989,000 readers.

The Kannada dailies have seen an increase in their readership by adding 86,000 readers. The category has a total readership of 17,540,000 readers. The top three players in this category are Vijay Karnataka (7,688,000 readers), Prajavani (7,645,000 readers) and Kannada Prabha (2,568,000 readers).

Malayalam dailies and Marathi dailies both have seen an increase in their readership by gaining 51,000 readers and 288,000 readers respectively. The top three players in the Malayalam language daily market are Malayala Manorama, Mathrubhumi and Deshabhimani with a total readership of 12,683,000 , 8,938,000 and 2,890,000 respectively.

The top three dailies in Marathi language are Lokmat, Daily Sakaal and Punya Nagari with total readership of 23,808,000 , 11,108,000 and 9,265,000 respectively.

The Tamil dailies have lost 104,000 readers this quarter; Daily Tanthi is the number one Tamil daily with a total readership of 19,789,000. Dinakaran is at number two position with around 16,155,000 readers.

On the other hand Telugu dailies have seen an increase in their readership by gaining 75,000 readers. The top three dailies in the category are Eenadu, Sakshi and Andhra Jyothi with a total readership of 14,729,000 , 13,939,000 and 5,313,000 respectively. | By Prabha Hegde [prabha(at)adgully.com]
