Nic Dawes of Mail & Guardian to join Hindustan Times!

Nic Dawes, the editor-in-chief of South African newsweekly Mail & Guardian is all set to join Hindustan Times as their chief content and editorial officer at New Delhi.

Dawes officially announced  this development to his team at Mail & Guardian  the weekly newspaper and digital news provider on 17th May 2013 . He  confirmed that he would be resigning from his current position with the publication  in September 2013.

Dawes will be reporting to Sanjoy Narayan who is currently Editor-in-Chief, Hindustan Times and will discharge his duties as the ‘Managing Editor’ in the newsroom.

His stint of nine years, half of which has been as Editor at M & G, is expected to end in September . 

“I have been offered a remarkable opportunity to help lead a process of change and growth at the Hindustan Times, one of the most important newspapers in a country going through momentous and fascinating changes. I look forward to putting what I have learned at the M&G to work in that new environment and on a very large scale,” said Nic Dawes in the online version of the Mail & Guardian.

Post his schooling in Canada, Dawes studied Science and later English literature at the University of Cape Town before attending graduate school in the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship. On his return to South Africa he wrote as a freelance for a wide range of local publications, and for television, before becoming News and Finance editor at one of the country’s early web portals, World Online. He left World Online to become Managing Director at Maverick Interface Design, a digital communications agency that helped companies to develop their internet and mobile strategies, but ultimately decided to return to journalism. After a stint as Cape Business Editor, and political columnist at the now-defunct broadsheet ThisDay, he joined the Mail & Guardian in 2004 as Associate Editor, focusing principally on public policy and economics. He has also been deeply involved in the Mail & Guardian’s investigations, and has won several awards for the same.
