Weekend Exclusive | MTV Rush brings out the musician in me: Shruti Hassan

Adgully caught up with singer, actor and music composer Shruti Hassan on the sets of MTV Rush as she and her band perform at the college festival depicted in Rush.

Shruti is extremely elated at being a part of MTV Rush which is poised to be a revolutionary show.

Speaking about the shift from cinema to television she states, “I don’t look at it as a television show. It is like a mini-movie series which I think in itself is very different and something new that MTV has come up with.”

She exclaims, “The most amazing part is that I don’t essay any character here. I am being a musician and playing myself which I don’t get to do very often. I always play characters. It’s a nice way for me to integrate both the worlds.”

Shruti reveals that she looks forward to essaying characters that bring out the performer in her and she does not believe in comparisions.

MTV Rush is essentially about the youth. So, we asked Shruti what are the things that she likes and dislikes about the youth of today. One of the things that Shruti likes about the youth is their ambitious nature. “Everyone is so much more driven, motivated and independent,” she exclaims. “The disadvantage would be that people are connected and yet disconnected,”quips Shruti.

She aspires to do more work in Tamil, Telegu and Hindi cinema and is extremely happy at the appreciation that has come her way for her work in the South Indian film industry. She recently starred in Gabbar Singh- which was a Telugu remake of Dabangg and won accolades for her performance.

Talking about her journey as an actor and a musician, she said, “I have had the opportunity to collaborate with some great musicians which includes film and non-films. My career started with Illayaraja which was a great start for me. Being a music director, getting my band to perform in Los Angeles and finally being able to playback for myself on films are some of the things that give me joy. My journey as an actress has involved a lot of learnings and hardwork. My parents have always been there to support me. They believe that your lessons have to be learnt by you alone.”

Shruti strongly asserts that every single director that she has worked with has been her mentor and has taught her something new. Her favourite singers are Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosale,  Tori Amos and Madonna.

Commenting on her personal life she said, “ I am very much single and have been busy setting up the house that I recently bought in Bandra.”
