Zee news back on BARC, more channels may join soon the rating system

After BARC started releasing raw level data, more news channels have started gravitating towards the measurement system. Zee news is the first one to make a comeback. As per the data released on Thursday, the channel opened up with a decent 5% market share, right behind ABP news. The channel is now hoping to improve its performance. As per industry sources, Zee news channels were said to be losing over 150-200 crore a year after they exited BARC.

Several advertisers were staying away from the channel as there was no way to find the viewership of channels because of its absence on BARC system. Following the footsteps of Zee News, NDTV, that is expanding after being taken over by the Adani group, may come back soon too as it will allow them to expand their advertising revenue, which has been muted for the entire industry.

The data released yesterday showed Zee numbers for the first time since September of 2022.“The BARC ratings system has gain faith of both government and News broadcasters. Our willingness to make the system more transparent as per the industry feedback has been commended by the government. We are now awaiting for others to join the BARC ratings mechanism soon,” said a highly placed industry source who’s also involved with BARC.
