MIB moves to stop illegal purchase or hire of broadcasting equipment

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has taken a serious view on unauthorised hiring of satellite broadcasting equipment. The Ministry is initiating action against erring broadcasters as well as teleport operators who hire such equipment illegally on the one hand and individuals or entities who conduct such underhand deals.

In its notice sent to all broadcasters and teleport operators, MIB has noted the hiring of satellite news gathering and digital satellite news gathering equipment by news broadcasters from unauthorised personnel or entities or trough illegal means. These equipment are being put to commercial use for uplinking or broadcasting.

MIB has asked broadcasters and teleport operators to stick to the Guidelines for Uplinking of Television channels from India, 2011, which clearly state that the MIB’s permission is necessary for the purchase of hire of all satellite news gathering and digital satellite news gathering equipment. Moreover, such equipment can be hired only from either Doordarshan or an authorised teleport operator, under permission of the MIB.
