R S Sharma appointed as the new TRAI chairman

Ram Sewak Sharma  has been appointed as the new chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India by the Government.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Ram Sewak Sharma ... as Chairperson Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for a period of three years," a government order said.

Mr RS Sharma, who is an IAS officer of the 1978 batch of Jharkhand cadre, has been credited for being a part of the Aadhaar project and its execution as well as paving the way for government’s Digital India programme.

Sharma has been appointed after the post was left vacant since mid-may due to the retirement of then chairman Rahul Khullar. Sharma completed his masters in Mathematics from IIT, Kanpur and Masters in Computer Science from University of California, Riverside.

He is expected to work on improving quality of telecom services by telecom operators across the country to address frequent call drops amongst other issues.
