BARC Wk 18 News: Aaj Tak leads genre; Republic Bharat ups market share

The share of News and Movies genres in overall TV viewership has started to stabilise, but continues to operate at higher levels. As per BARC data for Week 18 (Saturday, 2nd May 2020 to Friday, 8th May 2020), Aaj Tak continues to lead the Hindi News genre, while Republic TV maintains its unbeaten run as the numero uno English News channel [All India (U+R) : NCCS All : 2+ Individuals].

Hindi News

Aaj Tak has garnered a gross viewership of 344,731(000) this week and tops the table with a market share of 15.76 per cent. However, the channel has seen a decline in its gross viewership compared to Week 17, where it stood at 375,817(000) [All India (U+R) : NCCS All : 2+ Individuals].

Republic Bharat, too, continues with its strong show at No. 2, reporting a gross viewership of 251,655(000). The channel has garnered a market share of 11.50 per cent in Week 18. However, the channel’s gross viewership has seen a slight decline compared to last week, where it stood at 282,648(000).

 

ABP News is placed in the third spot in Week 18 [All India (U+R) : NCCS All : 2+ Individuals], reporting a gross viewership of 236,660(000), which gave it a market share of 10.82 per cent. Zee News follows at No. 4 with a gross viewership of 231,835(000) and a 10.60 per cent market share. India TV is placed in the fifth spot this week, garnering a gross viewership of 229,358(000) and a market share of 10.48 per cent. All these channels, too, have seen decline in their gross viewerships compared to Week 17.

On the other hand, Republic Bharat led the Hindi News genre with a market share of 17.4 per cent in NCCS ABC M 15+ | HSM | Weekdays | Wk 18 ’20 | 1900-2000. Aaj Tak follows in the second spot with a market share of 15.5 per cent. ABP News is placed at No. 3 with a market share of 12.1 per cent; India TV at No. 4 with a market share of 11.0 per cent; News18 India at No. 5 with a market share of 9.7 per cent; while Zee News is placed in the sixth spot with a market share of 8.7 per cent.

English News

It was decline time for the leading English News channels as well. While Republic TV continues to maintain its hold on the numero uno position, the channel has seen a decline in its gross viewership in Week 18 at 4,594(000), compared to 4,804(000) recorded last week [All India (U+R) : NCCS All : 2+ Individuals]. However, the channel’s market improved to 35.87 per cent this week.

Times Now remains unchanged at No. 2 with a gross viewership of 2,619(000), as against 2,763(000) in Week 17. The channel garnered a market share of 20.45 per cent. Placed in the third spot is India Today Television, which has garnered a gross viewership of 2,540(000) in Week 18, as against 3,312(000) recorded last week. The channel garnered 19.83 per cent market share.

CNN News18 is placed in the fourth spot with a gross viewership of 1,841(000), as against 2,033(000) in Week 17. The channel’s market share in Week 18 stood at 14.37 per cent.

Placed at No. 5 is DD News, which has garnered a gross viewership of 1.417(000).

In NCCS AB M 22+, Weekdays, Super Primetime (2100-2200), Republic TV is way ahead of the competition, garnering a 62.4 per cent market share. Times Now is a distant second with 10.7 per cent market share, followed by India Today Television (9.2 per cent), NDTV 24x7 (8.7 per cent) and CNN News18 (8.3 per cent).
