CCI issues demand notice to Google over failure to pay penalties

Google has received demand notices from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) over the search engine giant’s failure to pay the fines imposed by the commission for its “anti-competitive practices” within the deadline.

The search engine giant has filed an appeal with the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against orders of the CCI. The commission is yet to consider them.
Google had contended, in its appeal against the CCI order, that it will pose security risks for smartphone users.
Google had a month’s time to pay the fine as per the standard procedure. Google’s stay application is also pending before the court.
The CCI issued the search engine giant in two different cases.
One of the cases was that Google tried to dominate in many areas such as licensable operating systems for smart mobile devices, web search services, etc.
The probe found that Google’s domination prevented other app stores from entering the scene.

In the next case, the tech giant was probed for abuse of dominance in its policies on Play Store.

CCI is also probing Google over its AndroidTV operating system and causing barriers for companies who want to use in-house OS for their smart TVs.
