Madhav Chinnapppa to leave Google after 13 years of service

Madhav Chinnappa, an Indian origin Director of News at Google, has decided to leave the company after serving for approximately 13 years. He revealed the news in a post on LinkedIn, stating that he is departing as part of the layoffs happening at Google. Currently, he is on gardening leave, which gives him ample time to reflect on life, work, and his career.

Throughout his 13-year tenure, Chinnappa expressed pride in the achievements he made at Google. He was involved in various initiatives, such as the Digital News Initiative, the Google News Initiative, and Ludovic Blecher's Journalism Energy Fund (JERF). JERF was particularly remarkable as it showcased the best of Google's contributions, supporting the most vulnerable parts of the news ecosystem, including 300 Googlers.

As he moves forward, Chinnappa plans to take a month off to explore new opportunities and consider his next steps in his career.

The layoffs at Google were part of the company's response to the global economic slowdown. This year, approximately 12,000 people worldwide were impacted by the layoff announcements. In June, Google also made the decision to lay off employees at Waze, its navigation and mapping company, which has now been integrated into the Google ads system.
