Shashi Shekhar Vempati leaves Prasar Bharati after five-year term

Shashi Shekhar Vempati’s five-year-old tenure as the CEO of Prasar Bharati has ended. Vempati was the youngest and first non-bureaucrat to join as the CEO of Prasar Bharati. An alumnus of IIT-Bombay, he joined Prasar Bharati in June 2017.

After his long stint with Infosys, Vempati ran Niti Digital, a digital media start-up. During his tenure, the pubcaster registered a revenue growth of 13% from commercial operations during the 2021-2022 term. Post-pandemic surge in radio advertising revenues and increase in the DD FreeDish revenue were cited as the reasons. Mayank Kumar Agrawal, Director General, Doordarshan and DD News, has been given additional charge of the Prasar Bharati CEO. Vempathi tweeted: “Congratulations to @Mayank23Agrawal on donning the mantle at @prasarbharati. A dear colleague of past several years, my best wishes to him.” Further thanking the ministers, he tweeted: These past years have been an enriching experience working with 7 Ministers at @MIB_India. From late @arunjaitley, @MVenkaiahNaidu garu, @smritiirani @Ra_THORe @PrakashJavdekarji and @ianuragthakur, @Murugan_MoS. They have all guided, mentored and supported every step of way.”

Regarding his appointment five years ago as the CEO of Prasar Bharati, he said: “It was a leap of faith on the part of Prime Minister
@narendramodi to entrust responsibility to a rank outsider from the private sector. His laudable initiative to bring lateral professionals into government needs to be strengthened and institutionalised for sustained impact.”
