Many Broadcasters yet to tow the line on Ad Cap

.On 1 October 2013 TRAI 12 minute ad cap came into action, it’s part of the Advertising code of the Cable TV Networks Regulation Rules 1994. Though this matter has been challenged by the Broadcaster Association Regional and Music channels in the High Court, relief was given to the channels by HC as it asked TRAI not to take any extreme action against them till final order.

Around 140 channels are not following with the 12 minute ad cap regulated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The remaining news and non-news channels are carrying less than 12 minutes of ads average duration per hour of advertisement.

It includes 39 news channels which have aired 20 minutes of ad in an hour, 101 are non-news channels. These channels have failed to follow TRAI directive from 23 February- 1 March 2015 at 7 pm -10 pm time zone.

In the news genre some of the big names include, ABP news, CNN-IBN, Aaj Tak, CNBC TV-18, NDTV 24X7, Headlines Today, ETV Gujarati and Times Now in the non-news channel some of the bigger names are Star Plus, Sony TV, Sab TV, 9X Jalwa, Discovery etc.

The ad cap information has been published as the audience organisation had asked the authorities to release data on how much advertisement various channels are airing.It has not been decided by the TRAI Authority whether to publish reports on the above matter on a regular basis or any actioin has to be initiated  against the defaulting channels.
